"I HAD HEARD OF YOU BY THE HEARING OF THE EAR, BUT NOW MY EYES SEES YOU; THEREFORE, I DESPISE MYSELF, AND REPENT IN DUST AND ASHES.” - JOB 42:5-6 ESV
As an opening of the Lenten season, ALSA BUHAY celebrated Ash Wednesday Mass last March 1, 2017, held at the Delpan Sport Complex, Binondo, Manila. The mass was presided by Rev. Fr. Steven Ochieng of the Missionary Community of Saint Paul the Apostle. It is attended by approximately 150 individuals including Puso sa Paso Edukasyon Inc. beneficiaries and the fire affected families that are temporary dwelling in the Evacuation center.
Fr. Steven, considering that the people attending the mass are poor and affected by fire, focused on three main thoughts in his homily; first, “do not complain” instead, be grateful for what they have, and to count their blessings not their problems. Second, “not say bad words”, instead, to say words that can give hope and encourage or invite positive thoughts to the people; words that can boast the spirit of our neighbor, he added. And lastly “avoid gossiping”; instead of wasting time to insignificant things they should be productive on their own way! This is the time to acknowledge that we are SINNERS who need Repentance and Renewal.
